The
Saturday Fiddle

The Saturday Fiddle started in the early 1980`s.
It originally comprised 8 members who played in the same two fourball
groups each week. It was started by the late great George Smith
who was very concerned to keep the group exclusive. So much so
that he would not admit new members.
Eventually George handed over the reins of power. More accurately
they were dragged from his failing grip ! The Fiddle was then
allowed to slowly expand and today has more than 30 golfers (I
use that term under advisement).
The Fiddlers play a stableford competition each Saturday morning
as well as the Club Competition of the day. Each member contributing
£2 to the kitty each time they play.
The members are a very sociable group who stay for lunch and
a drink after playing until the money is paid out to the winner
of the day. There are also two away days each year. The Fiddlers
hold a black tie Annual Dinner in the Clubhouse each Christmas
(wives and partners invited) at which the golfer of the year is
presented with his trophy.
The Fiddlers also play a "Ryder Cup" match each year
against the SAGS. Sadly we have yet to win.
Our motto is very much that it is the taking part which counts.
The refrain being "its only a game". Of course we all
know it more than that!
