5 Day Members v 7 Day Members

For the 4th year running this annual event between the 5 day members (affectionately known as the “Last of The Summer Wine”) and 7 day members (equally affectionately known as “Esprie de Corp”) was held on Friday 3rd September 2010. The teams comprised of 20 players for each the format was 4 ball better ball using Stapleford System over 18 holes playing off the yellow tees. The scoring was the best accumulated score for each team. Three tees were used with 4 teams playing off the 1st tee 3 teams off the 3rd tee and the remaining 3 teams playing off the 17th tee.

Not only was the event being played for the Derek Leighton Memorial Cup for the winners, the loser’s were obliged to pay for the winners evening meal as well as their own which generally makes for a more competitive game.

The competition was a very close with the overall winners being the 5 Day members the total accumulative score as follows for each team.
5 day members 407 points
7 Day Members 397 points

After an excellent meal the Captain of the day Eddie Cole stated that he had made on or two critical tactical errors that could have cost his team the match. However being magnamus in defeat he presented a Magnum of fine wine to the victors which was consumed and enjoyed by all during the evening festivities.

The captain of the day for the 5 day members Harry Ratchford thank all for attending and praised his team for reselling the the Dereck Leighton Memorial Cup for the first time in 4 years and not having t pay for the meal. He also thanked Tracy and her staff for a fine meal especially the insertion of each captain’s initials within the pastry of the steak and ale pie. Harry also mentioned Tom Clark wife Maureen who undergoing surgery and wished Maureen a speedy recovery and we all hope to see them both at the club soon.

The cup was presented by the club captain Malcomn Trudgeon to Harry and his team
